Stay Close stars talk Ken and Barbie – the ‘musical theatre murderers’
This odd couple is sure to take viewers by surprise.

By David Craig

Published: Friday, 31st December 2021 at 10:30 am
The latest thriller from Harlan Coben is filled with twists and turns as you would expect, but arguably the biggest surprise in Netflix’s Stay Close is the inclusion of two musical theatre murderers named Ken and Barbie.

These two characters, portrayed by Hyoie O’Grady and Poppy Gilbert, quite literally dance their way into the show, but their polished appearance and sunny disposition mask something much darker lurking underneath.

Indeed, the mysterious couple are quickly revealed to be ruthless killers, but the motivation behind their crimes is not made clear until later in the eight-part miniseries.

So, what on earth could have inspired these bizarre characters? Novelist Harlan Coben explained that his inspiration for Ken and Barbie originates with a standout memory from his younger years.

“At half-time in NFL football games in the ’70s and ’80s there used to be group called Up With People, who would perform this really wholesome act,” he recalled in a statement to the press.

“They would sing all these Kumbaya-type songs and they had these fake painted smiles on. I’m sitting there going, ‘There’s got to be more behind those fake painted smiles.’ So I decided, wouldn’t it be cool if two of them were kind of psychotic killers?

Coben added: “They are the moments in the show where you go, ‘What the– where are they going with this?’ I kind of like that. I think Ken and Barbie keep us off balance a little bit. And yet as outrageous as Ken and Barbie are there is something about them that feels grounded and realistic.”

Stay Close star Bethany Antonia described the duo as “bonkers in the best way”, telling RadioTimes.com about a scene she shares with them later in the series, which unfolds in a secluded log cabin in the forest.

“It was as surreal as it probably looks, because every time we would do a take we would do the whole scene. So I was in the cabin even when there were no cameras in there, just so that Hyoie and Poppy could have something to play off of.

“So, being in there and reacting to it off camera was the exact same as seeing it on camera, because they are just terrifying… I really am intrigued to see what people make of them.”

As for the dance routines they perform throughout the series? “They didn’t have that much rehearsal either. They just pulled it out the bag so much… they look phenomenal,” she adds.

In an interview with RadioTimes.com, Stay Close star Richard Armitage also weighed in on the delightful oddity of Ken and Barbie, revealing that they presented quite a “challenge” for the creative team to overcome.

“They’re a couple of characters that you really enjoy in the book and actually weaving that into a screenplay and making it believable was probably a more difficult task than anything else,” he said. “Because to have a couple of musical theatre murderers, I think was a real challenge. But obviously, brilliantly cast.”

Indeed, Stay Close director Lindy Heymann was thrilled with the end result, even suggesting that we might not have seen the last of Ken and Barbie’s disturbing partnership.

“I would be very surprised if at some point someone doesn’t suggest that there could be a Ken and Barbie spin-off show,” she said. “Their early years and where they met is all described in the book. They are brilliant characters played by Poppy Gilbert and Hyoie O’Grady… The chemistry between those two was amazing.”

Here we take a look at some of the places you can expect to spot in the 8-part series, which is now available to watch on Netflix.

The gripping drama follows the seemingly perfect suburban life of mum Megan (Cush Jumbo) who has a dark secret in her past that comes back to haunt her.

Meanwhile detectives investigating a missing person begin to fear a serial killer is actually on the loose.

The series stars Richard Armitage as Ray, who Netflix fans will recall last filmed in Manchester for The Stranger, as well as Cold Feet star James Nesbitt and ex-EastEnder Jo Joyner as the murder detectives and Eddie Izzard as dodgy lawyer Harry.

Manchester city centre bars and restaurants
Eagle-eyed viewers will spot plenty of city scenes and bars in the series.

The Refuge bar on Oxford Road was the stunning setting for the glam hen night out for Megan seen in the opening episode, where the ladies take part in a life-drawing class.

At the heart of the drama is the lapdancing club Vipers where sinister things are afoot - and where Megan used to work as her alter-ego dancer Cassie.

The club exterior for Vipers was created at the derelict former nightclub Shorrocks Hill in Formby in a woodland setting.

It was painted a shocking pink for the filming which may fox those who frequented the famous club back in the day.

However Manchester revellers will no doubt spot that the swanky interiors of the club were actually all filmed at the popular Impossible Bar on Peter Street in the city centre.

Film crews and Stay Close's stars were spotted filming at the venue over a number of weeks during the spring and summer this year.

They were handily able to use the basement nightclub area of the venue during lockdown closures.

Northern Lawn Tennis Club

In the opening episode we can expect to see a very prominent scene set in West Didsbury's Northern Lawn Tennis Club.

As well-heeled parents are seen watching their children playing lawn tennis at the club, an eerie moment will see the main character of Megan lock eyes with a mysterious woman in the crowds.

We soon learn that Lorraine, played by Cutting It star Sarah Parish, knows Megan from her past life when she was known as "Cassie" and was a lapdancer in Blackpool.

Heaton Moor and the 'burbs

Film crews headed out to the suburbs to film some of the tense scenes in the drama including to Heaton Moor.

Watch out for acclaimed cafe/deli Pokusevski as the setting for a dramatic meeting between Megan (Cush Jumbo) and Lorraine (Sarah Parish) as she delivers some shocking news.

There are also sweeping scene of the 'burbs as we see more inside the seemingly perfect life of lead character Megan, where the film crew headed out to the large Victorian villa-lined avenues of Didsbury and Whalley Range.

Blackpool

We can expect plenty of sweeping scenes of Blackpool's sea front, Central Pier and all the glittering lights of the illuminations.

The seaside town will be seen in a whole host of scenes in the drama, where photographer Ray now lives.

Megan is seen driving back to the seaside town to confront her past demons, while the police drama ultimately lead there.

The Dream head sculpture

A distinctive "meeting point" in the drama will be familiar to many who travel down the M62 between Manchester and Liverpool.

For while In the book Coben uses the meeting point as the giant "Lucy the Elephant" sculpture in Atlantic City, in the Netflix series it's The Dream head sculpture based in Sutton Manor woods in St Helen's.

The spectacular 20 metre high public artwork can just be seen from the M62 when you drive past, or you can walk to it to admire the work by artist Jaume Plensa on the site of the former colliery.

The sculpture is seen from the opening moments of the drama and will loom large throughout, as it soon becomes clear in flashback scenes that something very nasty happened here.

Runcorn

The Silver Jubilee Bridge between Runcorn and Widnes is used as the perfect metaphor in the series to see Megan travelling from her cosy comy existent and returning to her past life.

We get to see dramatic views across the Cheshire and Merseyside coast as Megan journeys to address ghosts from her past.

Stay Close is available to watch on Netflix from December 31.

Stay Close location guide: Where is the Harlan Coben thriller set?
The Netflix series filmed across the North of England to create its fictional setting.

James Nesbitt in Harlan Coben's Stay Close
By David Craig

Published: Friday, 31st December 2021 at 8:00 am
Harlan Coben’s latest Netflix thriller Stay Close is all about a woman who fled her home to start a new life in a different town, but viewers might be left a bit confused about the geography of the move.

Naturally, you would assume that former nightclub dancer Megan (Cush Jumbo) travelled a fair distance to separate herself from a traumatic memory, but certain scenes suggest it could be just a relatively short drive away.

In addition, there is such a broad variety of environments featured that it’s tough to get your bearings, from suburban homes to beaches and urban nightclubs to sprawling forests – not to mention a monument in the shape of a giant head.

This creative team made a conscious chose to keep the exact setting of the drama ambiguous, perhaps due to the fact that it’s a deviation from the original novel, but we have all the details on where Stay Close was filmed.

Read on for your guide to the major locations featured throughout the series.

Where is Stay Close set?
The main drama of Stay Close is set in the fictional town of Ridgewood, where Megan (formerly known as Cassie) lives with her fiancé and three children.

It’s deliberately never stated where she used to live under her original name, but it is made clear that it was a seaside town somewhere in England.

In the Stay Close novel by Harlan Coben, this story takes place in the United States, with Cassie’s coastal home and workplace being situated in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Where is the big head in Stay Close?

“Dream” by Jaume Plensa is surrounded by Autumnal trees in St Helens, United Kingdom Christopher Furlong/Getty Images
At several points in Stay Close, we are taken to a sculpture in the form of a huge head, which might be familiar to some viewers living up north.

This construct is titled ‘Dream’ and is a creation of world-renowned artist Jaume Plensa, depicting a young girl’s head whose eyes are closed in a state of slumber.

It is located in St Helens and is visible around junction seven on the M62, which is approximately halfway between Liverpool and Manchester.

The sculpture was commissioned by ex-miners and St Helens council, and erected on the site which once hosted Sutton Manor Colliery, with its bright white colour intended to contrast with the coal that was once mined there.

“That head was the funniest thing, because it really is as big as it looks,” Stay Close star Bethany Antonia told RadioTimes.com. “It was huge and yet the way into it was a little tiny maintenance cover that you had to squeeze into.

“You’d think there’s going to be all this room in this head but there just wasn’t, so every time we did anything there we were just crammed in a little cubby house.”

She added: “It was really funny, but it looks amazing. It’s such a landmark for the show, and anyone that watches the show and then sees it will be really taken aback by how how big it is. It’s not been edited to look at that size at all.”

The Harlan Coben novel also features a grand, unusual sculpture, that being Lucy The Elephant, a six-storey piece of architecture located in Margate City, New Jersey.

Where is the Vipers club?

Another key location in Harlan Coben’s Stay Close is the nightclub Vipers, the venue where Cassie used to work and from which a number of men have disappeared under mysterious circumstances.

The interior scenes were filmed in the basement room of a real nightclub called Impossible in Manchester, which star James Nesbitt described as a “wonderful, beautiful, seductive, sexy, smoky” setting.

Mark O’Hanlon, location manager, explained: “The subterranean floor, which is what we used, wasn’t used all the time so in lockdown that was fantastic. That was ours no problem but we were filming for nearly six months.

“From when we started filming in February to when we finished filming at the end of July everything was open again. Luckily, we had a really good relationship with the guys there.”

The scenes set outside Vipers were filmed somewhere else entirely, with the production travelling to an old nightclub in Formby, Merseyside, which proved a perfect location thanks to the wooded area surrounding it.

O’Hanlon added: “I’ve got a lot of Scouse friends and they all talked about this place saying they used to go there when they were 17. It reminds me of the country clubs you get in Essex. It’s between all these trees and near the beach.

“You feel like you’re near the coast. That to me was one of the nicest locations I shot. I’ve always looked at it and thought it would be amazing to use it. After this it’s going to be flattened. By the end of the year it will all be gone.”

Where is Ken and Barbie’s log cabin?

Ken (Hyoie O’Grady) in Harlan Coben’s Stay Close Netflix
Two characters that are sure to get people talking are the all-singing all-dancing murderers Ken and Barbie, who at one point take a captive to a remote countryside cabin, which Stay Close director Lindy Heymann was particularly fond of.

“Knowsley Safari Park, near Liverpool, is one of the biggest privately owned estates in the UK,” she said. “It’s the most enormous estate. Honestly, you go through the gate and it’s still another 10 minutes to get to this cabin. There are sheep and fields and then the safari park.”

Heymann continued: “It was built by the Canadians after the Second World War. They had used the estate for the soldiers so as a gift they built a traditional Canadian cabin. It’s so brilliant. I said, ‘This has to be Ken and Barbie’s place.’ In previous versions their place had been a hotel room or an apartment.”

Where were the beach and carnival scenes filmed?

The event that kicks off the story in Stay Close is a vibrant carnival that begins marching down the local beachfront, before gradually making its way to Vipers for a raucous club night.

The seaside part of the parade, as well as later coastal scenes, were filmed on Blackpool beach, which might be recognisable to some viewers by the ferris wheel featured in some shots.

“The stuff in Blackpool was amazing because Blackpool was kind of closed, we were in the middle of lockdown, so it was like they put all the illuminations on for us and it just felt like we were at a real night out,” Antonia told RadioTimes.com.

“It was March [2021] so restrictions were still in place, clubs were still closed, and we just got to have these two nights on the town in Blackpool, although there was a mad storm that day that so it was freezing cold and, of course, we were at the beachfront.”

Where is the bridge in Stay Close?

A general view of The Silver Jubilee Bridge which crosses the River Mersey between Runcorn and Widnes Nathan Stirk/Getty Images
Megan’s old and new lives are connected by a grand bridge, which we see her drive across in an early episode as she seeks answers about a long-buried trauma.

While its location within the continuity of the show is deliberately left ambiguous, in real-life it is known as the Silver Jubilee Bridge or the Runcorn Bridge.

It can be found between the towns of Runcorn and Widnes in Cheshire, providing a crossing over the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal.

“[It] had been closed for nearly three years while they totally renovated it,” recalls O’Hanlon. “It’s all ironwork and they’ve repainted it. I was trying to be clever asking them if we could film there before it reopened but it didn’t work with the schedule.

“It had been open for a week and they wanted me to go and ask them if they minded closing for a day again. They were really helpful though. We managed to do it on a Sunday. We had a stop and go and it looked fantastic.”

He added: “It’s a really interesting shape and we had some really good drone stuff that day as well.”

Where else was Stay Close filmed?
The homes of the Shaw and Green family were actually just around the corner from each other, located in Didsbury, Manchester, while Lorraine’s flat can be found in Morecambe Bay.

“That’s a lovely place,” said Stay Close star Sarah Parish. “From Lorraine’s flat you can see right across Morecambe Bay to the Lake District, which is stunning.”

Meanwhile, the studio of failing photographer Ray Levine was created in Ashton-under-Lyne, but the production got more when they bargained for as work got underway.

Richard Armitage remembers: “We started in quite a severe lockdown so at first it was a very empty street with a lot of closed shops and quite an angry neighbour who really didn’t want us to be there filming.

“Every time we started filming he would get his hammer and his music out and when they called, ‘Cut’ he’d stop. It was weirdly frustrating and kind of amusing at the same time… That did ease off as we continued filming.”

An old rectory in Ormskirk stood in for the care home where Dave’s mother lives, while his stag do utilised some rooms at the Edwardian hotel and spa in Manchester.

Stay Close’ Cast Guide: Who’s Who in the New Harlan Coben Netflix Drama
By Fletcher Peters @fIetcherpeters
Jan 3, 2022 at 4:46pm
Stay Close cast guidePhoto: Netflix
Alert! There’s a new Harlan Coben drama series, Stay Close, now on Netflix. Fans of The Stranger, The Woods, Safe, and The Innocent should seek refuge from the blistering winter winds with this new mystery saga that’s now streaming in entirely on the platform. But, as all mysteries go, there’s a bit of backstory that can be hard to grasp after just the first episode. We’re here to unpack the cast and characters you need to know in Stay Close.

Most noteworthy, Coben alum Richard Armitage has returned for more twists and turns in the new series. You’ll likely recognize him from The Stranger, where he played Adam Price. In the new series, he plays a photojournalist who just so happens to nab pics of someone on the run. What could spiral out of these new pictures? The rest of Stay Close follows a woman with a double life, a missing persons case, and the detectives who might be able to connect the dots on all of the above.

Ready to meet the folks bringing you Stay Close? Keep reading to learn all about the cast of Netflix’s latest Coben drama.

1 of 7

Cush Jumbo as Megan Pierce
Megan, played by Cush Jumbo, is at the helm of Stay Close. She stars as a newly engaged woman ready to marry her partner of 16 years, Dave Shaw. But as the celebrations ramp up, so do calls for her second life (as “Cassie”) to become public knowledge.

Jumbo has already starred in a number of TV shows, including her role as Lucca Quinn on The Good Wife and The Good Fight, Lois Habiba on Torchwood, and more. Stay Close is her most recent role, but stay tuned for more updates on her career in acting.

2 of 7

Daniel Francis as Dave Shaw
Daniel Francis stars as Dave Shaw in Stay Close, Megan’s fiancé. He seems uninformed about her past life as “Cassie,” though we’ll have to keep watching to find out if her domestic partner is as secretive as she is.

Francis also has a number of roles in TV series like Homefront, Once Upon a Time, and now, Stay Close. Back in 2020, he starred in Steve McQueen’s Small Axe series, portraying Esmond Smith in the Education episode. Coming soon, he’ll have a leading role in the series Liaison on Apple TV+.

3 of 7

Bethany Antonia as Kayleigh Shaw
Bethany Antonia stars as one of Dave and Megan’s three daughters, Kayleigh, and she plays an important role in the series. The show revolves around the disappearance of a young man named Carlton Flynn — and in the end of the first episode, Kayleigh is seen wearing a pendant he “never took off.” Yikes!

This is one of Antonia’s first major roles. Along with Stay Close, she’s also starred in Pin Cushion, Get Even, and There’s Always Hope.

4 of 7

James Nesbitt as Michael Broome
As the Shaw/Pierce family drama is unfurling, DS MIchael Broome (played by James Nesbitt) is on the case. He’s following the disappearance of Carlton Flynn alongside partner Erin Cartwright.

Nesbitt is a revered actor with a handful of TV and film credits. His most notable work in movies includes titles like The Hobbit series, Match Point, and Waking Ned Devine. His stacked resume of TV work features Jekyll, Murphy’s Law, The Missing, The Secret, Bloodlands, and the upcoming Suspect.

5 of 7

Jo Joyner as Erin Cartwright
Beside Nesbitt is Jo Joyner, starring as DC Erin Cartwright — who also happens to be Broome’s ex-wife. While Broome attempts to connect old missing pieces to the new case, Erin seems to think that he’s trying too hard at tying up loose ends.

You may have recognized Joyner from any number of TV shows, which include Doctor Who, Eastenders, Ackley Bridge, The Confessions of Dorian Gray, and more. Most recently, Joyner starred in Shakespeare & Hathaway: Private Investigators, playing another detective-like role in Luella Shakespeare.

6 of 7

Richard Armitage as Ray Levine
Amid the detectives, the suspects, and the missing is another key player: a photojournalist named Ray Levine, played by Richard Armitage. Although his camera is stolen in the first episode, photos he took in the woods still manage to upload to the cloud — showing a shadowy figure running from something.

Armitage starred alongside Nesbitt in The Hobbit series, and he also starred in the recent Netflix adaptation of Harlan Coben’s The Stranger. Most recently, he starred in Castlevania, Space Sweepers, and Uncle Vanya, and he’s set to debut two movies — Now & Then and The Man from Rome — in the coming months.

7 of 7

Sarah Parish as Lorraine Griggs
Our final cast member to know in Stay Close is Lorraine Griggs, portrayed by Sarah Parish. She seems to be the one with the most information about Megan’s second life as Cassie, warning her that an old foe is on the lookout for revenge.

We’ve seen Parish before in a number of movies and TV shows. You may recognize her from The Wedding Date, The Holiday, or Blackpool. In the realm of TV, she’s starred in The Cockfields, Bancroft, Medici, and Broadchurch.
