I asked Sarah Deane (the scriptwriter) about the story and the transmissione date. Here's her reply.
Yeah, that's kind of the story. I guess it does sound gloomy put like that, but don't forget this is Jimmy McGovern-produced, so it was always going to be gritty - a set of very social dramas and the premise of the whole series is to address some of the serious issues affecting the day-to-day lives of ordinary people, so there's not much room for comedy!
What I've tried to do with DNW is put a very normal, 'Everyman' type of character like Ellie into a situation where she finds herself questioning her own morals and ethics. I very much want to ask questions of people and there is a situation in the piece (which I won't go into detail about as that would spoil it) where I hope people watching are going to be thinking 'well, what would I do in that situation?'.
We all think we know ourselves and like to think, also, that we'd do the 'right thing' if we were ever presented with a moral dilemma, but until you're actually in that situation, our morals are only ever hypothetical. If we were all asked to stand up and be counted, how many of us would actually stand up?
John Mulligan is a Machiavellian character. In the eyes of the law, he's a bad guy, but in the eyes of real life and the things some people have to do to survive, I think people watching will find it very hard to totally condemn him.
And yes, those dates are correct. I think DNW is on Wednesday May 20th but I will confirm this as the order of the episodes is still subject to change.
