RICHARD ARMITAGE
Vital Statistics: Richard is 36 and currently single. He lives in South London.
ON PLAYING GUY OF GISBORNE IN ROBIN HOOD:
I find myself defending him all the time, even though he’s terribly bad. I do enjoy playing him, because you get to be mean and you have to be polite and civilised in real life, don’t you? And we get to ride horses, do archery, sword fighting and sort of play in the forest.
ON MARRYING THE VICAR OF DIBLEY:
Having spent six months snarling at people as Guy of Gisborne, to spend six weeks laughing every day was really good for me. Dawn French is a wonderful woman – I love her attitude to work and the business. I think she’s amazing. I’ve been begging her by text to play Friar Tuck – that would be so brilliant, wouldn’t it?
ON HIS FANS, ‘THE ARMITAGE ARMY’
They’re all really clever, and the do research on things that I’m doing and then I go on line and I’m like, ‘Oh, God, I didn’t know that!’ I like that fact that there’s a community out there, getting together and enjoying themselves because of something I’ve done.
ON THE FUTURE:
I don’t think I’ve gone anywhere near the high point. It may not even be in front of the camera. The older you get, the more critical you become. Whoever writes the stuff I’m in must think I’m a complete pain in the backside because I will question them about every word the character utters. I suppose I’m a bit too curious, but I think I probably will have a crack at directing at some point.
BEST BRITISH ACTOR:
James McAvoy was blinding in The Last King of Scotland.
FAVOURITE PLACE IN BRITAIN:
Seal Island, off the west coast of Scotland, took my breath away. I got out of the car, and the silence was deafening. It’s a tiny little uninhabited island, but it had a huge impact on me.
FAVOURITE BRITISH QUIRK:
When you go to a bar and stand there with your fiver in your hand. No-one will go, ‘It’s me next!’ They just wait. They don’t do it anywhere else on the continent.
THING YOU MISS MOST FROM HOME:
At the moment, sausages. And newspapers. I’ve been away since March now, and I only read the papers when I come back. There’s something about getting up at 10 am on a Sunday, making your sausages and just going through the newspapers.
BEST THING ABOUT BEING BRITISH:
I think its sensitivity to cultural integration. And I know that’s a cliché but London’s a big melting pot. And I’m really proud of it.
WHERE YOU’LL SEE RICHARD NEXT:
Robin Hood returns to BBC One this month.
