Soprano Barbara Bonney Cancels All Upcoming Concerts

The American soprano Barbara Bonney has cancelled all upcoming concerts and tours, according to a statement on the website of IMG Artists, which had been her representatives.

The statement, dated August 1, says that "due to personal circumstances, [Bonney] will not be performing for the foreseeable future"; it also states that "Ms. Bonney is no longer represented by IMG Artists."

Lincoln Center confirmed this week that Bonney will not be appearing as scheduled in the December 10 "Art of the Song" recital with mezzo-soprano Angelika Kirchschlager. Kirchschlager will instead perform Schumann and Schubert songs with pianist Malcolm Martineau.

The December 10 concert was part of a duo recital tour that also included a December 17 appearance in San Francisco, which the San Francisco Chronicle reports has also been cancelled; Kirchschlager and Martineau will perform instead on that date as well.

According to a representative of Decca Classics, Bonney's record label, additional dates on that US tour were to be December 1 in Boston, December 3 in Atlanta, December 14 at the Napa Valley Opera House in northern California and December 19 in at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in southern California.

Bonney is also missing from the current Salzburg Festival run of Mozart's La clemenza di Tito, in which she was to play Servilia. Veronica Cangémi has taken over the role in the production, which opens tonight with Michael Schade, Dorothea Röschmann and Vesselina Kasarova and with Nikolaus Harnoncourt and the Vienna Philharmonic in the pit. No announcement of the substitution can be found on the festival's website.

Born in 1956, Barbara Bonney has been praised for her superlative Mozart and Strauss interpretations and has made over 90 recordings on major labels, including sacred music of Bach and Schubert, art songs, and complete opera recordings.
